To realise a pinned connection, one of the chord members is redundant, as shown in Figure 4.4, and the connection of that redundant member to the column is usually allowed to slip in the direction of the axis of the chord. 1 1 Redundant member Figure 4.4 Redundant member in a simply supported truss In the longitudinal direction, stability is usually provided by vertical bracing.
