Under normal loading conditions the bottom of the connection is in tension. The haunch below the rafter, which in lightly loaded frames may be a simple extended end plate, serves to increase the lever arms to the tension bolts, thus increasing the moment resistance. The haunch is usually small and short, and is not accounted for in frame design. Figure 11.2 Typical apex
